A Brief History Of Soap Making

June 22nd, 2008 by toriemarcelissen

By Jeffrey Dorrian Today, handmade soaps are found at craft shows, specialty stores, on the internet and in some retail outlets. Many people enjoy making novelty soaps that both look beautiful and work to keep your skin feeling fresh. Though it is readily available now, this wasnt always the case. Records indicate that soap making may have existed as far back as 2800 B.C. There are records that indicate both the Ancient Greeks and Romans both started experimenting with olive oil in their initial soap making. During its earliest years of creation soap was considered a luxury and was only available to the richest individuals and families. Soap makers were hired to create their products and were paid well by their wealthy employers. Because of its rare status, it took years before handmade soap became accessible to everyone. But, one thing that remained unchanged through the years is the fact that, like its current use, soap was used to wash skin and clothes when it was first discovered. As the years progressed, Europe established a soap making industry as did America. While handmade soap was generally made by women during the colonel American era. Each year, usually before spring, women would gather together and make soap from the ingredients that were saved from the winter months. Generally colonial soaps were made from lard. Since large industries took over the process of soap making, the quality has suffered immensely. Soap making has been quite profitable to large corporations. However, these large corporations do not offer handmade soap and, therefore, lose control over the special touches that only handmade soap can offer. Rather than a luxury item, as it was earlier considered, soap has become an everyday must-have household item. The availability of regular soap lead to the inventions of other things, including detergent, dishwashing liquids, stain removers, liquid soaps, etc. Today, handmade soaps are created by talented crafters worldwide. Unique designs, scents, colorations and styles are among the many characteristics found in todays handmade soap. From lavender soap to soap loaves, handmade soap is still very much considered a luxurious item, but not anywhere near as unattainable as in its earliest years. Soap loaves, much like the name implies, can be cut down to make bars of any size of shape. Many soap makers show their creations at various craft fairs throughout the year, as well as specialty stores. Handmade soap is thought to be wonderful for your skin. Because each bar contains healthy ingredients that help to rejuvenate the skin, many users swear by its effects. Today, everyone from amateurs to small business owners are experimenting, selling and enjoying their own handmade soap. Vanilla, lavender, floral and practically any other scent imaginable is available. The next time that you find yourself peeking in and out of quaint stores lining the streets or browsing the aisle at a local craft fair, snoop around and see if you cannot find someone who is offering handmade soap. Otherwise, there is always the internet where a variety of handmade soap is right at your fingertips. Jeffrey Dorrian is the soap guy. Really, that is his website http://www.thesoapguy.com He has been making handmade olive oil soap for the past five years. “Handmade soap is a true inexpensive luxury anyone can enjoy.”handmade soap Article Source: http://EzineArticles.com/?expert=Jeffrey_Dorrian http://EzineArticles.com/?A-Brief-History-Of-Soap-Making&id=136695 md bad credit lender hard money lender any position ace payday loan mesa arizona no credit check loan

Farrier: Working With Horses

June 15th, 2008 by toriemarcelissen

By Nikola Marshall If you enjoy working with horses and are strong, then being a farrier just might be for you! According to the Farriers Act 1975, the definition of a farrier is any work in connection with the preparation or treatment of the foot of a horse for the immediate reception of a shoe thereon, the fitting by nailing or otherwise of such a shoe to the foot or the finishing off of such work to the foot. The craft is an ancient one, possibly practiced as long ago as during the time of the Roman Empire. To become a farrier, you must attend one of the many schools offering classes in the craft. A wise idea, although not required, is an apprenticeship after graduation. This lends itself to hands on skills while under the watchful eye of an experienced farrier. A farriers work consists of checking a horses leg, foot and hoof, cutting away any excess hoof growth and ensure that the horse is balanced. Selection of the appropriate shoe relies on the horses size, foot condition and whatever work or activity the horse is involved in. Next, adjust the shape of the shoe using an anvil and hammer. Then affix the shoe to the hoof. There are few considerations you should take into account if you feel this is the career path for you. You must enjoy working with horses and know how to handle them. Some horses dont like their feet handled and can be difficult to work with. Good manual skills and hand-eye coordination are a must. You do want to hit the nail rather than your fingers! Physical strength and stamina are givens. The horses you may work with can be upwards of two tons! Youll need to possess good communication skills so that you can work well with the horse owners, and veterinarians as well. Farriers are often self-employed and, as a result, will need to posses a few more skills. You must be willing to travel. You will be taking your business to the horse owners. This means driving to farms, ranches and private owners, all of whom many be quite a distance apart. Organizing appointments and keeping accurate records of things such as expenses, payments and other accounts is essential. Hours rely on the horse owners schedule. Likely, you will be working days and often, on weekends. Earnings reflect your area and how much you choose to charge. Keep in mind costs of equipment and travel expenses when you set your fees. Being a farrier is a physically demanding job. You may be asked to shoe one or many horses at any given time, not to mention time spent on the road between appointments. A lot of bending and lifting is involved and, of course, be ready for problem horses! As a farrier, you must keep the horses welfare in mind first and treat the animal humanely and respect. Maintain and build upon your knowledge of your craft. Good customer relations is essential for repeat business and can earn you recommendations for future clients. Be honest and trustworthy. Always handle any complaints in a timely manner. You are your own public relations person and your work is your best advertisement!Being a farrier is demanding but rewarding work. If working with horses is what youd like to do, this career path is one to be considered Nikola lives and writes in Oklahoma. Sew Bouquets of Cabbage Roses

June 1st, 2008 by toriemarcelissen

By Marian Lewis Cabbage Roses Are Blooming Everywhere! Sew Some Up Fast And Easy! Have you noticed all the fabric flowers adorning garments these days? Take a look around the department stores. They are everywhere on everything on people and in homes. Fabric flowers can be very expensive to buy. But, you can sew your own with just some scraps of fabric and a little time. Here is a simple technique for sewing cabbage roses in minutes. I like two sizes of roses. The smaller one requires bias cut fabric 3″ wide x 15″ long. The larger rose is 5″ wide x 27″ long. Try a sample of each to see what you like. Of course, you can make them any width or length. Experiment. Remember that the weight of the fabric makes a difference. Just know that the length and width of the piece of true bias fabric needed depends on the size that you want the rose to be when finished. Fold the width in half with the right sides out and wrong sides together. Do not press. Make tiny slits along the raw edges of the double bias fabric. This will prevent the bias from curling when you stitch and wrap it into a rose. A side note: This is a good trick to know to keep bias from twisting in other areas of your sewing. Either machine or hand baste 1/4″ from the raw edges matching slits on the edges as you sew. Pull the baste stitching to gather up the fabric slightly. Tuck in one of the raw edge ends. That will be the center of the rose. Now, roll or wrap the gathered fabric around itself loosely. When it is all wrapped, pull the other end down under the rose to hide it and tuck it in. Pin in place. Thread a needle with a single thread run through beeswax to strengthen the thread and keep it from tangling. I also like to run the thread under the iron to melt the wax into the thread. This is another great tip to remember for all your hand sewing. Then take hand stitches back and forth across the bottom of the rose to hold all the layers together nicely and secure the loose end. On the outside, turn the folded edges back a little to look like a flower. NOTE: The more you gather the thread, the flatter the flower. Looser gathers make the flower stand up more. You have to experiment with the gathers to get the look you want. Remember, no pressing required. Now you want to make your rose look finished on the back. Press some fusible interfacing to a scrap of matching rose fabric. Draw a circle about the size of the bottom of the base of your flower. Cut out the circle. The interfacing will keep it from fraying. Hand stitch the circle to the bottom of your rose to cover all the raw edges. You can attach a pin back to the bottom or sew the rose directly to your garment. I prefer a pin back so I can easily remove the rose and use it for other garments, hats, scarves, etc. I’ve seen these roses embellishing a wedding gown that was absolutely stunning. Use some unique fabrics to make your roses. Try prints, stripes, plaids, etc. Have some fun! You might even try making some roses from men’s old neckties. Necktie fabric is already cut bias. Extra tip: Save the interfacing from the ties to make new ties. To keep your roses looking fresh and to keep from being crushed, put small roses in Leggs hosiery plastic eggs. For larger roses, make a ring out of cardboard from an old file folder or cereal box. Place it around the rose and tape it to the right size for the rose. Use your roses on your lapel, in your hair, to hold a scarf, decorate a hat, embellish any garment or on a special gift instead of a bow. How about some cabbage roses on decorative pillows or your evening bags or put them on your curtain tie-backs. I’ve even seen them on a ribbon wrapped around some towels in the bathroom! Really gorgeous! Make your own floral arrangement to match your decor. It just makes sense to do it yourself! Use your imagination! You are the designer! They are quick to make as gifts. It’s Not Just About Dieting

May 26th, 2008 by toriemarcelissen

By Jan Nicholas You may not like what Im about to say, but dieting alone will not help you to lose weight. You have to give your body the exercise it needs. As I mentioned earlier, a couple of centuries ago, people were involved in a lot of manual labor. This gave their bodies all the exercise that was needed. But due to the changed life styles, most of us do not have to engage in strenuous work. Most of us sit in front of computers all day long or engage in other sedentary works. It is because of this that exercise becomes crucial for weight loss. Generally people do not gain weight till their early twenties. But once they cross the 25 mark, then visible signs of weight gain can be seen everywhere and in the mid section in particular. There is something very important that you have to understand if you are really considering the possibility of losing weight. You will have to consciously give your body the required exercise that it needs for the weight loss to be really effective. Watching your diet alone is not going to yield results unless it is coupled with proper exercise. You have to make a conscious effort for this. And the solution for this is a work out routine. When we think about the life in the country, there is always something rosy about it. What is it that the people in the country have that we do not? When you ponder about it you find that those lucky souls eat good food, they work really hard, by work I mean real physical work and they have good nights sleep. Of course they do not have all the amenities and facilities that the city life has to offer. But the city life comes with a lot of strings attached. People in the cities are generally less healthy than the people in the country. One of the reasons is pollution of course but the other reason is because people in the city do not get enough exercise. Now, when I talk about healthy bodies please make no mistake about what I am referring to. I am not talking about the Mr. Universe kind of body, the bodies that we see on WWF. I am talking about people who are fit. And fitness and exercise are just two sides of the same coin. They both go hand in hand. In order to stay fit you need exercise and in order to exercise you need to be fit. But just because you are not fit now, it does not mean that you shouldnt exercise. And just like that, just because you do not have any visible excess fat on your body right now, it does not mean that you need no exercise. Exercise is the best way to keep obesity, cardio vascular disorders, hypertension and all those lifestyle-related disorders under control. First of all let us get one point straight, exercise does not necessarily mean pumping metal. If you do have the time to go to a gymnasium everyday, then that is well and good. But I suppose most of us do not have the time for a regular work out in a gym. So the other alternative is to do it at home of course. But whether it is at home or at a multi-gym, there is something that I want to tell you. Whatever you are doing, you must try and do it regularly. Consistency is very important for an exercise routine to have the desired effect on our body. Getting started is the easy part, it is sticking to a regular exercise routine that is difficult and this is what makes most people give up in between. Most people get on to a beautiful start. They buy track suits and gym-wear, running shoes and a whole lot of other gear. Their first day at the gym is almost a celebration. Then as the days go on, they find it increasingly difficult to meet the domestic and professional demands and so their routine slows down and finally comes to a complete workout burn out. In other words, the stop working out completely It is a universal fact that the most chosen time for work outs is the evenings. If you can stick to work out in the evenings then it is well and good. But most of us find ourselves exhausted in the evenings. We find ourselves physically and mentally drained. And at that time our bodies will be just too tired for a work out. The result is that after the first few days of working out, the interest just dwindles away. The other reason is that in the evenings a thousand and one things may crop up and then there is hardly time for a warm up. So it is best to set aside some time for exercise in the morning itself. There are two advantages of setting apart time in the morning. The first advantage is that in the morning our bodies are fresh and full of energy. Now over here I want to make one point clear. There is a popular misconception that exercise depletes the body of energy but the case is just the opposite. Exercise pumps up more blood through the different parts of the body and warms up the body, so in fact, after exercise we feel more charged and ready to face the challenges of the day. The second advantage is that in the morning we can plan for the whole day without letting the exercise routine affect the rest of our activities. What about those of us who have never worked out before? In such cases you might need to start off under the personal supervision of an instructor and that may require that you go to a gym. But what I would suggest is that there are two simple things that any one can do for which you do not need the help of any instructor. You know what these are? They are walking and swimming. Any body can walk and those of you who know how to swim can swim. For these two activities you do not need much gear and experts say that these two exercises have no side effects and are excellent stress busters. So in the morning wake up just half an hour earlier, put on your walking shoes and hit the roads. Most roads will be less crowded at this hour and less polluted too. It is a wonderful way to start a day. Dealing With A Jealous Date

May 17th, 2008 by toriemarcelissen

By Peter Portero You go out to dinner, to the movies, or to the mall, and when you glance at another person your date starts seething. How should you handle a jealous date? Remember, jealousy is often about insecurity. Perhaps your glance did linger a bit too long on the attractive person at the next table, or maybe you did smile flirtatiously at your restaurant server. If your date’s display of jealousy is a one-time event, soothe the hurt feelings with a reminder that you find them the most attractive person in the room. Some folks, however, seem to live in a constant state of jealousy. Every move you make is scrutinized, and if it’s deemed inappropriate, the jealous partner may react with rage and fury. Whether their jealousy stems from your behavior or their own personal insecurities, you may need to evaluate the relationship again. Living with a jealous person can be emotionally draining and exhausting. You must offer constant reassurance, as well as be forever vigilante of possible jealousy-inducing situations. Some folks feel that they must constantly avert their eyes from members of the opposite sex, lest they feel their partner’s wrath. If your partner’s jealousy is significantly affecting your life, you may need to reconsider your relationship. Try talking with your partner about your concerns. If nothing changes, it may be time to move on. And, as always, if your partner’s jealousy leads to any type of emotional abuse or physical violence, leave the relationship immediately. Streamate, or “stream mate” refers to meeting someone online through webcams. Ideas for Shooting a Memorable Wedding Video

May 14th, 2008 by toriemarcelissen

By Morgan Hamilton There a lot of decisions that must be made when it comes to planning a wedding. For instance, a decision must be made on the venue of the ceremony. Decisions must also be made on the number of guests to invite and the food that would be served to them. Of course, decisions on important aspects such as the finances and the decorations must also be made. Looking into hiring someone to do a wedding video is one of the items on most couples’ to-do lists. The idea of a wedding video only really cropped up with the popularity of the home video camera, though its been standard for years for couples to hire professional photographers to shoot their wedding photographs. Making videos for weddings has eventually blossomed into a huge industry. The first decision that a couple must make is whether they really need a wedding video. This decision will depend both on personal preferences and budget. There are a handful of things that need to be considered in addition to these two criteria. A couple has to decide on the length of the wedding video and the people who will watch it. Some couples content themselves with the photographs and the memories of the wedding, while some couples still opt for having a wedding video done to capture their special day. You have to think about who you are going to hire to shoot the video if you do decide to get a wedding video done. Professional videographers often have samples of their work that you can view. This means that you will have the opportunity to decide if you like their styles or not. The problem with hiring professional videographers is that they are often expensive. A couple can easily end up paying as much as the photos by hiring a professional videographer. Hiring a student from a local university or community college film class can also be a great option. Many of these students are quite talented but havent had a chance to flex their creative muscles. This muscle-flexing comes cheap, especially if they can use the video to fulfill a class requirement. However, you have to go over exactly what you want with the student beforehand, and make sure that the student knows what he or she is doing if you do opt for a student-produced wedding video. 10 Ways to Speed-Up Your Job Search Effort

May 9th, 2008 by toriemarcelissen

By Dee Davis Today everyone knows at least one person who has lost their job to down-sizing, right-sizing, cut-backs, production reduction or a mean, vicious bogus leader who could care less about your family, your life or your existence at the company. This may sound a bit overboard, but everyone has probably experienced the manager, supervisor or company leader from hell, and if you havent just stick around. It is this type of leadership that is taking companies down the path of death and destruction. So whats a jobless person to do? First you must get organized and do a serious self examination. Look at the things you love to do, your gifts and talents. This is not fluff, you may be at the best time of your life if you are willing to get real and do some serious work. You cannot expect others to do this for you, you have to own the unemployment label, and decide where you want to go from here. Leave the pity party for later. Do you have a charismatic personality? Have you ever done sales? Cant live knowing that your life depends on you getting a commission? Try it. Yes, thats easy for me to say, but nothing ventured nothing gained and you should always have more faith in yourself than a bogus leader. It is unfair and foolish for employees today to think that their employer should always have their best interest in mind when planning company growth and expansion. The company leadership is looking out for the bottom line and thats all. In a perfect world they would care about workers, but this is not a perfect world its a global economy and its all about the Benjamins. Here are 10 things you must do before starting your job search: 1. Do an honest in-depth evaluation of your job skills. Take a serious look at your management, financial, communication, research and computer skills. 2. List all those transferable skills, for example, auditing, appraising, recruiting troubleshooting and organizing, and all those task that fit under the umbrella labeled other duties as directed. 3. When writing your resumes select your words carefully. Use only strong, positive points that are relevant to the job you are seeking. 4. Use skill titles and job headings that match the job you want. Unrelated job titles are a sure indication that you do not have knowledge about the position. 5. Consider doing contractual work. Just consider it. 6. Practice your interviewing skills before the actual interview, and master the one important aspect of nonverbal communicationeye contact. 7. Consider taking a job in an area outside your comfort zone. You might like it. 8. Remember to speak with those folks willing to act as a reference. Never assume that they will say positive things about you, call them and make sure your relationship is still sound. 9. Never email a cover letter as an attachment without a signature. Those cover letters without signatures are often the ones eliminated first. Use a scanner or email from a copy store i.e. Kinkos that will allow you to scan your signature and send a signed cover letter. 10. Keep track of all those positions you are applying for and make sure the people living with you are aware you are applying for positions so they answer the telephone with style and grace. You are a representation of the type of home your come from, so remind everyone to be professional. To learn more about bogus leaders visit http://www.paraview.com/features/bogus_leadership.htm . D.
