Do Subliminal CD’s Work?

Thursday, August 30th, 2007

By Anthony Hosking This is really a two headed coin, while part of me wants to say not it does not, the other part is screaming out yet it does. Ok let me qualify that sentence. From my years of being a hypnotist, I would have to say yes. I have seen too much over the years to deny its power. However from a different point of view I would say no, there is not a lot of prove to say that it does work. Let me put it this way, the old saying A picture paints a thousands words it is very true and works well with the sub-conscious mind. If you have ever been to see a hypnotist for any reason, be it on stage or in a clinic, what does he tell you to do? Yes that’s right he tells you to imagine you are somewhere or doing something, he is painting a picture for your sub-conscious mind. When we try to relate that to a subliminal CD or tape we are left with a problem. How do we paint pictures with short sentences, I have my doubts that we can. All subliminal messages I have had anything to do with, fall short when it comes to pictures. Do not get me wrong, I am not against subliminal messaging at all, I just question the validity of such a medium without pictures. They all consist of messages recorded at just below the conscious minds ability to hear, while the belief that the subconscious mind can in fact pickup the messages and set to carrying out the affirmation etc. I have a lot of doubts that it really works with affirmations alone. Why do we need pictures to reinforce the affirmations? We use pictures in the field of hypnosis to reinforce what is being said by the hypnotist, this creates a certain pull towards the subconscious mind. I assume that everybody reading this does know what the subconscious mind is, and at least has a little working knowledge of its power. The title posed a question that deserves an answer, in short I think they do work albeit not very well. Why? You might ask. Because of a number of variables. Firstly the CDs and tape you buy through a catalog or in a music type shop are very genetic. They are designed to be a fix all, because it is simply not viable to record many different ones for a certain type of problem or person. Once the recipient has a CD or Tape all loaded to go, the only affirmation that come out of the music are themselves generic. All the tracks on a certain CD or tape are usually recorded by the one person. What happens if you don’t like his or her voice? Certainly you do not hear in the conscious mind and I doubt that the subconscious mind can work with a voice it does not like. So what is the answer to this dilemma, you need a voice that is familiar and pleasing with the ability to talk in a way that would create pictures in the subconscious mind of the recipient. The perfect choice would be yourself, however this poses another difficulty, what does the average person know about recording one of these type CDs or Tapes. How many people have the knowledge let alone the equipment? I believe I have come up with the perfect answer, let the recipient create there own CDs and Tapes. Before you say I could never do that the answer is yes you can. With the latest product that kowhai productions have released, almost anybody can, including you. Steps, is such a product and will take you through the whole process step by step. Including a couple of backing tracks, beat tracks even a script to get you going. Wont you be surprised when you have a complete track all together in 5 minutes? Yes by recording these CDs yourself, I believe that the success rate will be far greater. You not only have the voice that would not upset the subconscious mind you would have the ability to put the passion in your voice so as to paint a picture for the subconscious mind. The First 100 people buying this product will save $10 dollars off the price Anthony Has been a hypnotist for a lot of years now. Can Antidepressants Ever Cure You?

Wednesday, August 29th, 2007

By Christopher Green Theyre the plagues of the modern world. Stress, depression and anxiety are on the increase every year and they show no signs of ending their relentless onslaught. Over 40 million people are affected by these illnesses annually, and for the majority, powerful antidepressant drugs offer the only solution. Whats curious is that over seventy percent of people who stop taking them, for any length of time, will relapse into another stressful or depressive episode Somethings rotten in Denmark. Because if these drugs are as effective as their manufacturers claim, then sufferers should be cured of their illness. Clearly, this isnt happening. If these drugs are so good, why dont they cure sufferers? The commonly held belief, both by the medical profession and sufferers is that anti-depressant drugs are the most effective treatment. This isnt quite true. Antidepressant drugs DO help a sufferer. But only TEMPORARILY. They cannot offer a permanent cure because anti-depressants treat ONE of the SYMPTOMS of these illnesses reduced levels of “happy chemicals” called neurotransmitters. Neurotransmitters are the chemicals inside our brains that help to regulate our moods. What anti-depressants do is give sufferers a “boost” by raising levels of neurotransmitters. The problem concerns a seventy percent chance of relapse when sufferers stop taking the meds. This happens because the drugs havent tackled the root cause of these illnesses. By boosting levels of happy chemicals the drugs simply mask the problem. In the short term, giving our mental well-being a boost by increasing the levels of happy chemicals is a helpful step in STARTING the recovery process. The last sentence is very important. It explains how these drugs should be used. Because when we feel stressed out, burned out, terrified of the future or that life has no point (all symptoms of stressful and depressive illnesses), its almost impossible to function. Finding your way out of the fog is so hard. And thats where antidepressants can help. By providing a boost, you can feel more able to cope. You can START to take the first steps towards recovery. But they cannot provide a permanent cure because the only way to cure these illnesses is to address the root cause. The root cause are harmful mental habits and processes we have learned and used for most of our lives since childhood in most cases. And there lies the crucial difference. Antidepressants can help us in the short-term by CONTROLLING the illness. Learning the mental habits and processes that crush these illnesses so they cannot even begin to arise help us in the long-term by CURING these illnesses. I firmly believe that people who are suffering from stress, anxiety, panic, depression and similar illnesses, want to get rid of it from their lives forever. Cure means cured, permanently. I overcame a terrible 5-year period of anxiety-induced depression without taking antidepressants. I did it by learning more effective mental skills and processes and I turned my life around and found happiness again. What worked for me will work for you and it will provide the one thing you deserve and what antidepressant drugs can never provide: A permanent cure to your suffering. IMPORTANT: PLEASE CONSULT WITH YOUR HEALTH PROFESSIONAL BEFORE YOU STOP TAKING ANY ANTIDEPRESSANT MEDICATION. Chinese Jump Rope

Monday, August 27th, 2007

By Sheree Marty Imagine having a great time playing with just a simple piece of elastic string! Chinese Jump Rope is a jumping game popular around the world! Chinese Jump Rope found me as a child and once again, through my profession as a physical educator. The game is funny like that, popping up from generation to generation, verbally passed from one to another like a folk tale. Chinese Jump Rope is a challenging game played by anyone anywhere. The simple rules test the skill and coordination of all players. An elastic rope is the only equipment needed for play. The game is easily learned and always fun! Chinese children first played Chinese Jump Rope in the 7th century. Rediscovered by English children in the 1960’s, Chinese Jump Rope remains as popular as ever. Chinese Jump Rope is no ordinary “rope skipping” game. “Enders” hold an elastic rope while a “jumper” jumps the rope in special ways. The challenge? To jump successfully! RULES A Jumper jumps until a jumping mistake or “miss” is made. -A miss can be made if a jumper jumps “out” instead of “in”. -A miss is also made if a jumper touches the rope incorrectly while jumping the game. After a miss, the jumper trades positions with an ender. The jumper starts from the very beginning of the game on the next turn. Every Chinese Jump Rope game begins with the rope held in basic position. Enders: 1. Face each other and step inside the rope. 2. Place the rope around the ankles. 3. Step back until the rope is stretched. Two parallel jumping lines, about 12 inches (30cm)apart, are stretched between the enders. The jumper stands outside the rope, ready to play. Simple words describe simple CJR jumping steps! “IN” Jump both feet inside the rope. “ON” Jump both feet on top of the rope. The left foot lands on the left rope; the right foot lands on the right foot. “OUT” Jump both feet from the middle to the outside of the rope. Feet land together on one side. “SIDE OUT” Jump over both ropes from one side. Both feet land together on the other side of the rope. “STRADDLE OUT” Jump a straddle! The left foot lands outside the left side of the rope. The right foot lands outside the right side of the rope. “SIDE-BY-SIDE” Jump quickly side-to-side. Both feet start “out” one side of the ropes. -Jump side: The left foot lands outside the left rope. The right foot lands inside the rope. -Jump side again quickly: The left foot lands inside the rope. The right foot lands outside the right rope. Jumpers call the steps out loud while jumping. Calling helps the jumper remember the “pattern” of the jumps! Practice “jumping steps” with these simple jumping games! JUMP 1: IN.. OUT.. SIDE-BY-SIDE.. ON.. IN.. OUT JUMP 2: IN.. STRADDLE OUT.. SIDE-BY-SIDE.. IN.. OUT.. SIDE OUT JUMP 3: SIDE OUT.. SIDE OUT.. ON.. SIDE OUT.. SIDE OUT.. ON .. SIDE OUT JUMP 4: SIDE-BY-SIDE.. IN.. STRADDLE OUT.. IN.. ON.. SIDE OUT No enders around to hold the rope? Draw two parallel chalk lines on a play surface (sidewalk, concrete, pavement). Happy jumping! Sheree S. Are Liberal Arts Degrees Really ‘Liberal’?

Saturday, August 25th, 2007

By Samantha Sebring The study of liberal arts is a classic discipline, intended to provide general knowledge and intellectual skills instead of focused professional or occupational skills. The scope of the liberal arts has changed with society. It once emphasized the education of elites in the classics but, with the rise of science and humanities during the Age of Enlightenment, the scope and meaning of “liberal arts” expanded to include them. A degree in liberal arts can provide the basis for career advancement as it trains students to write effectively and think analytically while also allowing them to explore the nature of the various liberal arts fields of study. Some popular liberal arts fields of study include the following: Early Childhood Development If you are interested in early childhood development and want to become a public school teacher, you must complete a bachelor’s degree. All states require a bachelor’s degree as a prerequisite for a teacher’s license. An online degree in Early Childhood Education provides academic requirements for various career levels in occupations related to childcare and early childhood education in the public and private sectors. The bachelor’s degree generally takes four years to complete. The bachelor’s degree courses typically focus on classroom issues and Pre- Kindergarten through third grade instructional methods. Sociology Sociologists study human behavior as it pertains to human interaction within the guidelines of an organizational structure. Human behavior is greatly influenced and governed by social, religious, and legal guidelines. A sociologist studies these behaviors and the influences that preserve certain behaviors and change others. Sociology is also a broad science that covers many different disciplines in the social sciences. Sociology also studies more tangible measures of human behavior such as class or social status, social movements, criminal deviance, and even revolution. Philosophy A philosophy major is the most general type of college degree you can obtain. It focuses on the “nature of being”, knowledge, and contemplating right and wrong in moral issues. A philosophy degree trains you to become both regimented and creative, learning to reason through abstract questions. Students will apply their knowledge to form an argument for debate. The principles of philosophy affect other fields of study such as physics and religion. Every religious belief and field of science is subject matter in philosophical inquiry. Skills that are helpful in your philosophy program are puzzle solving skills, debating, critical thinking and reading skills an organized thought process, and the ability to think outside of the box. Education for Liberal Arts Online Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies or Bachelor of Science degrees consist of an integrated core curriculum in the arts and sciences combined with student directed specializations. The liberal arts degree is popular for those with higher career ambitions, as well. Many future law or foreign services professionals find that getting a liberal arts degree such as political science is a great starting off point in their academic pursuits - it’s both personally rewarding and beneficial for the courses they will take as they progress. A BA in liberal arts can also provide the foundations for careers in medicine and business. Students with a degree in liberal arts enrich their existing knowledge of the world and develop a broader framework for understanding social change in a global context. A Brief Guide to Online Graduate Programs - Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN)

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

By Afa Ismayilova The World Wide Web has made it more than possible for nursing professionals to further their education and obtain their Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) within the Health Care Systems Management (HCSM) field. Previous programs were once reserved for nurses who probably had only a part-time work commitment while they implemented a rigorous class schedule into their daily routine, putting their current needs on hold while furthering their education, all while living close to campus. But now, online colleges and universities have exploded with the internet revolution, making it easier than ever to obtain a degree, no matter where you live- without ever having to leave the comfort of your home. Not to mention that the vast majority of World Wide Web graduate programs can be completed at your own pace, taking a few classes (or even just one) while you continue on with the rest of your life and daily commitments. In order for your efforts to be successful within the in-demand, highly prestigious HCSM field, an online college or university’s master’s degree program must meet certain requirements in order for your degree to be worthwhile. After all, it would be unfortunate if you completed all of the necessary work, only to find out that it was for no purpose. For example, an MSN curriculum designed and taught by a knowledgeable and seasoned faculty is crucial for your online learning experience in Health Care Systems Management, or any other field for that matter. Tech support is another, for what good would the best online MSN program be if you are having technical problems accessing the site and your necessary courses. If a college or university offers both on-campus and distance learning MSN programs, it’s important that the same, complete accredited curriculum is available for both programs. Be sure that all necessary courses are available online- not just a few with the remainder needing to be completed directly on campus. You should have the same, quality education online as someone who travels to, or lives on, the college campus. All graduates from the same college or university should be looked upon equally by potential employers. Some Lies I Identified in My Life and the Miracles God is Doing Now! Part 2

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Matthew Robert Payne I am poor because I dont serve mammon; This sounds so right but many wealthy people tithe and give up to 50% of their income and do great things for the Lord through supporting ministries with good results that they have found and been led by the Spirit to support. Many people have become very wealthy by applying the prosperity doctrine and have continued to grow in the Lord and give and give and give to the Lord. I know the Lord can do more with $10,000 a year from an executive or a businessman then my paltry $35 every two weeks in tithe and $40 for proofreading for ministry. I have to laugh at while I scoffed at the prosperity teachers I lived a lie that said I could continue to sleep with harlots and go to heaven as long as I said sorry each time I did every second week. I have been broke from sin, not from serving God. Praise God that today I am living in resounding victory from that sin over my life. A sin I had no faith I could conquer because I lacked a simple teaching that took an hour to impart to me. I did not know the difference between being sorry and truly repentant. And I had no I idea how to really repent. God gave me that knowledge in a DVD teaching and a sharp dressing down by a counselor. Praise God for his mercy on the prideful man I still am and the ignorant man I was that when He saw me really weeping before him He gave me the grace to leave and took away a demon that used to pick me up and drag me there. Some people think its a noble thing not to work and earn money and be poor but the proverbs says a lazy man does not work and this makes him poor. Paul says also that if a man does not work neither should he eat. Yet the Lord Jesus says a lot about how the poor can be blessed in knowing him and He was even asked for temple tax and was broke and didnt have it as was Peter asked at the gate by the beggar for money and instead healed them. To be full time in the ministry a person needs to get a grip on poverty and this lie that I have to be poor to be righteous. I lived this lie for years until an Apostle of God knocked it out of me and the recent course did the rest. There are so many good people who are really gifted that your money could expand their ministry and you dont even have to be called to the five fold ministry. You dont even have to give money. You can ask any ministry any little concern or big one to send you their prayer points and needs each week or month and you can email them back your written prayers and if they are from the depths of your heart and line up with the promises of God and the truth of the Word that you might feel led to quote in the prayers as random scriptures come suddenly to mind, by inspiration of the Holy Spirit You might find that half an hour on your knees each week and a written edifying prayer that a real man of God though he be little today in the eyes of the world can won you an enduring and lasting friendship when he each week openss his little blessing from his a faithful praying widow or your teenage daughter or successful suited up business executive male or female. Did you know that one person praying that is living a holy life can hold the rain from pouring on Sydney Australia for three years under inspiration of the Holy Spirit to bring a judgment that will bring a nation to its knees? Elijah did it and he prayed only once and the rain stopped. But if you are called as all of us are called to share our faith, a simple letter box drop of your whole community or city with your favorite tract would take some serious money. Well if you printed the tract yourself. Everything costs money and Jesus had no worries with money as the Father anointed Him with signs and wonders. He didnt have to preach a mini service on giving each week, He came to the attention of some mighty rich sinners in pubs and bars and these rich good hearted people sowed thousands into his ministry of which he was always giving away to the poor. So dont think you are self righteous because you are poor. There are many good reasons you are poor. I drove taxis for so many years I lost my qualifications for being a payroll clerk. I suffer from mental illness now and my hands shake with a bad tremor and jobs are hard to get that you dont need experience in. Id love to find a church that would use my writing each week or basic office skills where I could work for free and in fact there is one Christian ministry that is looking for a position for me in their marketing department that I pray I will get. Proverbs says I was poor as I saw harlots. I will continue to be poor if I believe I am not worthy of money and do nothing to earn some money or make something worthwhile for money. But I have plans and God seems to be inspiring them and confirming them with witnesses. I am not proud; If my teachers only let me preach gee I could turn this church around; I am not worthy of sane friends; this is my lot in life, I still love God, I will just be Job. Let me share my heart with you on these ones listed. Perhaps you have felt like me. Gee if you can relate to all of them we might make great friends and find healing together! I am not proud God was very gentle in the way He told me that I had pride issues. I know he has told me one of my issues and I have faith that mu new prayer counselor can seek out the roots of where this took hold of my life and heal this root and then help me deal with the pride. Meanwhile daily prayer and daily reading for the Word is my part in the healing game. You only have to read the letters of Paul to see how many things you have to get better at. Guys I have much work to be done on me. A prophet said 18 months ago that I was hurting a lot of people and I had a lot of power and strength and that God wanted to put me away like a car in a garage and close the garage and get all the dints out of me, polish me up and bring me out shiny as new. Now finally I have found a man that has committed to helping me heal and the painful but happy journey of healing has began. The Lords timing is perfect and he certainly knows how to humble me. If my teachers only let me preach Gee I could turn this church around My teachers are anointed by God to lead their flock and shepherd their flock. Three weeks of me in the pulpit could do untold damage as a tried to show revelation to them in three weeks when the Lord wants to show then slowly over a year. Who knows the ways of the Lord. But any man who thinks he is better then his pastor has a pride issue and needs to work on fruit in his own life and submitting to his leadership and trusting God will raise him up. It says in Peter that if we humble ourselves before the Lord in due time the Lord will lift us up. If we wait on the Lord, and we do our part and remain humble at the right time, when time is due, the Lord will exalt us. My challenge was I have been in the pulpit in other churches a few times and have been very highly praised and given good feedback and guys I just loved preaching I knew I was born for it. But God has his seasons and his seasons include times of personal growth and healing and God knows that LL I needed was that taste and I was going to do the hard work on myself to qualify for the pulpit. I shared four times to groups of mental health professionals about living with my mental illness and was very warmly received and appreciated and that also was well received but over time fizzled out to nothing and once again the Lord showed me how good I am at presenting mental illness and making it understandable. All great men took time. Jesus took 30 years, Moses took a total of forty in Egypt and forty in the desert and then had forty years leading a stubborn people. Man poor old Moses has such a hard life. I am only 39, I am hoping for a breakthrough at forty rather then eighty though lol. Abraham took 25 years for his son to be born. I was told I would share the gospel with people who did not know Jesus in my future 25 years ago this year. Its promise I have been living for. All these numbers and yet Ezine articles in their grace lets me share online to 6000 people and I am very content speaking to you guys each week. At least By march 2007 I might have a hundred sermon outlines. Lol This is in no way an advertisement for an Australian church to invite me to speak to their congregation and lets face it with the stuff I am sharing here what pastor would want me in the pulpit yet, so I hope you guys dont think this is a clever sales pitch, its just me dealing with a lie. When you are good enough to preach God will give you an audience. When you have the knowledge and the fruit of that relationship with God. Many gays are like that in fact many sexually molested people have issues with how God could allow them as a child to suffer like they did. Many people have father issues based on inner bitterness they have toward their own father and so to relate to a Father in heaven that isnt like their own hurtful father is just to much for them That is an issue I have to do a lot of work on but my father really did do his level best to love me and though I suffered at the hands of a child abuser it wasnt really Gods fault. I am not worthy of sane friends My two friends up till six weeks ago, one is Bipolar or a Manic depressive and the other is on prescription pills for chronic depression and sleeping pills to knock him out each night so he can sleep. Its a lie that because you suffer mental illness that you have t hang around people that suffer like you. You can get to know and get close to people that can understand you that are not ill. That is a fact because I have done it. Many people who suffer think they are the worlds most righteous man in the world like Job was in his day. This is in most cases a lie. Few men have been as good as Job, before or since. Job 29 (New King James Version) 1 Job further continued his discourse, and said: 2 Oh, that I were as in months past, As in the days when God watched over me; 3 When His lamp shone upon my head, And when by His light I walked through darkness; 4 Just as I was in the days of my prime, When the friendly counsel of God was over my tent; 5 When the Almighty was yet with me, When my children were around me; 6 When my steps were bathed with cream,[a] And the rock poured out rivers of oil for me! 7 When I went out to the gate by the city, When I took my seat in the open square, 8 The young men saw me and hid, And the aged arose and stood; 9 The princes refrained from talking, And put their hand on their mouth; 10 The voice of nobles was hushed, And their tongue stuck to the roof of their mouth. 11 When the ear heard, then it blessed me, And when the eye saw, then it approved me; 12 Because I delivered the poor who cried out, The fatherless and the one who had no helper. 13 The blessing of a perishing man came upon me, And I caused the widows heart to sing for joy. 14 I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; My justice was like a robe and a turban. 15 I was eyes to the blind, And I was feet to the lame. 16 I was a father to the poor, And I searched out the case that I did not know. 17 I broke the fangs of the wicked, And plucked the victim from his teeth. 18 Then I said, I shall die in my nest, And multiply my days as the sand. 19 My root is spread out to the waters, And the dew lies all night on my branch. 20 My glory is fresh within me, And my bow is renewed in my hand. 21 Men listened to me and waited, And kept silence for my counsel. 22 After my words they did not speak again, And my speech settled on them as dew. 23 They waited for me as for the rain, And they opened their mouth wide as for the spring rain. 24 If I mocked at them, they did not believe it, And the light of my countenance they did not cast down. 25 I chose the way for them, and sat as chief; So I dwelt as a king in the army, As one who comforts mourners. How To Know If Your Diet Pills and Weight Loss Products Work!

Monday, August 20th, 2007

By Casey McCarthy Diet pills are a weight loss product that is taken by mouth. They contain medication that will speed up the metabolism as it suppresses the appetite. For those people who are overweight, diet pills can assist them with their weight loss goals. Over the counter diet pills contain diuretics to assist the body in flushing out excess fluids. A lot if the foods that we eat contain a lot of salt, which retains water naturally. One of these diuretics is caffeine. Over the counter diet pills are not expensive, and can be bought anywhere. They are available in grocery stores, health food stores, pharmacies, department stores, and small convenience stores. Over the counter diet pills are one of the few drugs that are not regulated by the food and drug administration. This makes it very difficult to document any side affects or assess any risks associated with taking over the counter diet pills. Only when private companies decide to study the diet pills for side affects will the results be made public. Most over the counter diet pills are never tested. Prescription diet pills do not contain the same ingredients, as over the counter diet pills. Prescription diet pills contain ingredients that are stronger and work in different ways. Some release a neurotransmitter called serotonin, which is found naturally in the body. Serotonin affects moods, and can help curb the appetite. Doctors are reluctant to prescribe diet pills, and will only do so for their patients that are obese. Even then, the doctor will closely monitor the patients progress by charting their weight and doing blood tests often. Doctors will recommend a strict diet and exercise for their overwait patients. Sometimes, the patient does not want to wait that long for dieting results and will buy over the counter diet pills. The advantage of prescription diet pills is that the food and drug administration has the power to test any prescription diet pill that is developed. It can take up to ten years of study to approve one diet pill. This is done for the safety of the public. In past decades, there have been great and heated debate regarding diet pills. Some feel that the food and drug administration should be able to test over the counter diet pills just as it does prescription diet pills. They both do the same thing. Manufacturers of over the counter diet pills do not want to have the restrictions the food and drug administration would impose if they were to take over testing their products. The two sides have been battling for years over this subject. The battle will continue as both sides feel that they are right. The manufacturers of over the counter diet pills stand to loose a lot if the food and drug administration were to win. In past decades, millions of people have benefited from taking diet pills. When they are taken in the correct dosage, diet pills can assist the overweight in achieving their weight loss goals. Always consult a physician before starting any weight loss program. Essential Oils To Ease The Heat

Saturday, August 18th, 2007

By Alan Davidson Summer in HoustonTis the season for trips to the beach, picnics in the park, and enjoying the great outdoors. There is also a price to be paid for our summertime frolics. Too much fun in the sun can cause sunburn; too many barbecues can upset the stomach; and pesky flying insects abound. Aromatherapy is the fun and holistic use of plant essential oils to treat and balance the body, mind and spirit. These oils are a natural way to minimize the effects of our Houston summer. A few ways that E/O are helpful are in skin care, cooling off, pesky critters, indigestion and the general malaise of the constant heat. Ill first introduce you to the oils you can use for some summer complaints. Later in the article Ill talk about specifics for applying the oils to your body. Skin Care Sunburn is a common problem for outdoor enthusiasts. Lavender oil is by far the most versatile essential oil in an aromatherapists first aid kit. It is also the best oil to use for any problem with the skin such as burns, irritations or insect bites. It is one of the few oils which can be used directly on the skin, or neat. For serious burns you can create a blend of oils by adding to the lavender a few drops of blue chamomile oil for its soothing effect (its expensive, but well worth the investment). Geranium oil is a cell regenerator and a few drops makes a nice addition to your blend. It is a good idea to hydrate the body first with cool water, and apply the essential oils in a moisturizer. I usually blend my oils together in the palm of my hand, add the moisturizer and smooth over my body. This treatment can be repeated up to four times a day, depending on the seriousness of the burn. Insect bites and repellentMosquitoes are a nuisance through much of the year in our fair city. I find a drop or two of lavender oil on the bite with a gentle caress will ease the itching and discomfort. For flea or chigger bites I add blue chamomile to create a blend and apply neat. Repelling mosquitoes is more difficult. There are two oils which can be used to ward of the frisky pestscitronella and garlic. The challenge here is not to offend your neighbors. I put 20 drops of citronella oil and 20 drops of emulsifier in a 4 oz spray bottle and add water. Shake well before spraying. This solution has worked well for me in the jungles of Mexico and the Amazon (the natives there are not so finicky about aroma as the natives of Montrose). The garlic solution is more potent. Current research recommends 1% garlic oil as a repellent (this solution also kills 100% of larvae with in 24 hours, even in standing water). Of course you smell like a pizzeria, but the industrial chemical alternatives arent much more attractive. Cooling OffOne of the lovely effects of peppermint oil is its cooling of the skin. A cool bath with a few drops of peppermint oil creates a welcome change to the hot and sticky weather. A word of caution, peppermint oil is stimulating. Applications in the evening may inhibit a good nights rest. Thats why I suggest a few drops in a bath as opposed to the traditional 20 drops of oil per bath. The constant heat can generate headaches. A simple treatment is to use peppermint oil, either a drop, neat on each temple or in cool compress over the forehead. If using a compress be careful of the eyes as peppermint oil can cause stinging. IndigestionAll the holiday picnics with their barbecues, sauces, potato chips and homemade ice cream can take their toll on the digestive system. A simple remedy is to put one drop of peppermint oil on the tip of the tongue. The flavor will explode in the mouth. This is the only internal Aromatherapy treatment I recommend. Essential oils are highly concentrated and dangerous for internal use. Please respect the use of these oils. A blend of peppermint, lavender and marjoram oils massaged into the stomach area will alleviate some of the discomforts of over-indulgence. Summertime MalaiseThe oppressive heat can drain our physical strength, agitate tempers or plain just give us those summertime blues. A group of essential oils called the euphorics are a great way to beat the heat. These oils work through the limbic system to release endorphins, which generate a sense of well being. I work with grapefruit and bergamot oils (less expensive) as well as rose, jasmine and melissa (these are rare and precious and expensive). When coupled with the water of a bath these oils work to balance the emotions and comfort the soul. Here are some simple terms for using aromatherapy in your home: Neat means using the E/O directly on the skin. Many of the oils are too strong for straight applications to the body. Use E/O neat only when directed. An emulsifier means a solution which allows the E/O to dissolve thoroughly so it can be added to water. A cup of warm, whole milk is a natural emulsifier or they can be purchased at any health-food market. In the bath this ensures that the oils distribute evenly on the surface of the water to envelope your body as you submerge into the tub. A compress is a cloth soaked in cool or warm water. A carrier is any oil, lotion or base that is used to blend the E/Os together. Here are some simple rules for creating your own home remedies: I use high quality oils for treatments. These recipes are designed for the potency of this grade of essential oils. I use oils from Source Vital and Aroma Vera. Many other brands of oils available in health-food stores and boutiques are of a lesser quality. I suggest you spend the extra money to ensure quality and potency for you E/O blends. For a massage oil or lotion you can use 20 drops of E/O per 1 oz of carrier. For severe sunburn you can use up to 50 drops of E/O per 1 oz of carrier. For a bath you can add 20 drops of E/O to an emulsifier. These simple guidelines can help you to use the most potent form of plant energy we have for treating the human condition. Remember to handle all essential oils with respect and they can, in turn, contribute health, balance and well being to your life. Soapmaking Idea: Sugar + Cornstarch = ?

Thursday, August 16th, 2007

By Lisa Chambers To me, soapmaking is a never ending learning process. There’s just so many different ingredients and techniques to try- the possibilities are endless. I have always kept my mind and eyes open for new ideas. Well, I also love to cook and where better a place to come up with new ideas than your very own kitchen? I’m not sure if anyone else has tried this or thought of it yet, but for me a new trick popped up and I wanted to share my experience with other soapmakers. Having a sensitivity to coconut oil in soaps and also having temperamental skin in general, has kept me stingy with lathering oils in my soapmaking recipes. However, people are so used to the abundance of lather usually associated with bought soaps (since they cheat with sodium laurel sulfate), that a more “lotion-like” lather is harder for some to except. Besides, let’s face it- who doesn’t like big fluffy bubbles? Because of this I have always tried to increase lather in my soaps through other natural additives. The addition of various types of powdered milks not only adds the nourishing we all know is famous for gorgeous skin, but has seemed to help somewhat in adding more of a lather and contributed a certain creaminess to it. Silk fibers added to my lye water gave even more positive results for me. I always knew silk provided wonderful “moisture locking properties” and a truly luxurious feel- but since I felt how it significantly increased my soaps ability to lather, it quickly became one of my favorite indulgences. Then there’s the other trick of the trade… Sugar. Whether dissolved in lye-water or it’s presence enters in from the addition of honey in my soap batches, sugar has displayed outstanding results. As a matter of fact, when I first began soaping, castor oil was almost mandatory in all my soap recipes due to the rare ricinoleic acid in it that contributes to lather without being nearly as drying as typically used “lathering oils”. I have found the combination of silk and sugar works so well together that even though I still respect and welcome castor oil for it’s wonderful content of essential fatty acids, it is no longer absolutely necessary for me to soap with. Well, good thing I’m a “label reader”! One day while baking my husband a special treat, I happened to glance at the ingredients list on a bag of confectionery sugar. “Ingredients: sugar and cornstarch”. As with many addicted soapers, I have a personal problem with often swiping items from our food cabinets to sneak into soap- if it’s in the kitchen, it’s game! I have tried cornstarch in my soap before and it was in fact really nice. (Cornstarch is soothing to the skin and sometimes used as a replacement for the feel that silk gives in vegan soaps.) I decided to give it a shot. When my soap got to a very thin trace I added about one tablespoon confectionery sugar per pound of base oils, attempting to add it carefully and space it out around the bowl for easier mixing. I then put my stick blender to it and mixed it very well, making sure that it was evenly incorporated into the mix and no clumps were left behind. I noticed it did thicken up a tad, but not so much that it was that hard to manage getting my soap into it’s mold when it was ready. Once curing time was up and I tried it, I jumped up and down like a kid at Christmas. It seemed to have the effects a soap would have from the batches I would take the extra steps to dissolve my sugar in water before introducing the lye, and the added feel that cornstarch can bring! The only difference is that was a lot easier and faster than having to heat up your water and stir like a mad person to dissolve your sugar, and then wait for it to cool down a little before adding my lye. It seemed to be a truly effective time saver. I love sharing ideas with other soapmakers and I really hope some of you out there will find this trick helpful. Happy and safe soaping!
