By Annette Colby Food is not simply fuel to keep you going. Nor is it the enemy, out to turn your body into an ugly fat mass or clog up your arteries. So many expert sources dispense food rules to live by: Eat four of this every day, eat three of these everyday. Avoid these certain foods at all costs. Eat this food in moderation. The evening news bombards us with food dangers. Diets provide even more wacky rules. No wonder food is such a messy subject. Its turned into an intellectual battle of good versus evil. I say enough of this determining what we should eat by listening to other peoples criteria. Wouldnt you agree that somewhere within yourself and your own body lies the source of knowing what you want to eat and how much to eat? It might just be time to reclaim your authority of your life and your body by trusting yourself as the ultimate authority of eating? Lets go back to basics. As human beings we are alive in a physical body. This is your body. It is your individual guidance system that tells you when you are feeling good and when you are not feeling good. This body is a multi-sensory body that contains everything you need to know when you are being true to yourself, what feels good to you, and what tastes good to you. Individually, we have purpose for being here on earth. We are meant to bring joy to earth through our physical bodies and the expression of ourselves. We eat by taking something from outside of ourselves into our mouth. Through chewing, we release the life from the food itself. Through the miracle of digestion, the life force that was within the food becomes a part of our physical body. The remainder is released as waste product and renews the earth. Through this process, we are the cycle of life. Somewhere in the process of growing up, we made many decisions about ourselves on this earth. We decided how alive we could be, how authentic, how open and real. We decided whether we have the right have to our own needs - and have those needs met. Whatever decisions we made are reflected in our bodies and in our food patterns. For any person struggling with resolving a food issue, the realization eventually awakens that the food issue was about something much deeper. The food is a language of sorts, speaking of our own decisions to be alive, awakened, authentic . . . or not. YOUR FOOD PATTERNS / YOUR ALIVENESSFor a moment, take a look at your own food patterns. How does your style of eating relate to your own aliveness, right to self-express, be passionate, be real, and your inter-relatedness to the greater whole? Does your eating style create physical discomfort? Does it involve self-denial and self-sacrifice? Does you eating style keep you wrapped up in attempting to resolve your weight (perpetual dieting) rather than standing up and claiming your right to have what you want? Maybe you can begin to identify your own pattern from one of the suggestions below? 1. Perhaps you have decided that you must be a pleasure-denier? Eating without sitting down. Eating unconsciously. Eating with guilt. Gulping down food in a hurry and always eating on the run. Theres no time in this world for your needs and you do not rank as a priority in your life. Your life and your needs do not exist or are not as valuable as someone elses. To be self-centered is viewed as being selfish. 2. Do you binge in private? Not allowing anyone to see you having pleasurable foods? Having to sneak your pleasure in the dark? In a trance-like state, eating foods you don’t want anyone to know you eat . . . in volumes you don’t want anyone to know you want. You eat quickly, not wanting to get caught. The irony is that you’re not really enjoying the food, you’re not really hungry. It’s usually a time we can be alone, with all your wants and desires. It is a time we don’t have to pretend to be capable, competent, pleasant, likeable, strong, and without needs. It is a time to be entirely self-centered, where you don’t have to take care of the needs of anyone else and can focus completely on yourself. 3. Do you deny yourself energy / food (forgetting to eat breakfast and lunch) throughout the day then attempt to provide yourself with as much pleasure as you can quickly get in the evening? Choosing to feel guilty afterward, once again denying yourself the pleasure of having what you want? Compulsive overeating is characterized by uncontrollable eating and consequent weight gain. Compulsive overeaters use food as a way to cope with stress, emotional conflicts and daily problems. The food can block out feelings and emotions. Does your eating style numb out your inner voice, your inner truth, your right to accept pleasure? 4. Do you restrict food entirely - denying yourself the energy needed for life? Perhaps leaning more towards anorexia. Never allowing yourself to be hungry. Hunger, your human need, stands for every need you have in life. Meaning, you have no needs. You are above being human. While underneath feeling you have no worthiness as a person. By denying your needs you deny your worthiness as a person. An attempt to be void, be empty. To say, I deserve nothing. While at the same time playing a game of superiority saying, I dont need anything. Hunger, and having needs, is part of being alive. 5. Do you hoard energy - holding onto as much energy (food and fat) as you can, not feeling safe without it? Keeping weight on your body as a way not to be too powerful, too sexually attractive, too alive, too authentic and real? Not trusting your self if you were thin. In this eating style, the subconscious fears becoming thin. Whether the fears are of starvation, sexuality, a new job situation, dating and relationships, career choices, family issues or just life itself, the weight may be serving the purpose of insulating you from those fears, from feeling, and thus avoiding personal growth and change. 6. Are you bulimic - somehow sensing it is your birth right to be powerful and have what you want, but also in conflict about your needs? Indulging in huge amounts of energy (food) but then raging and throwing up what you arent allowed to have? Bulimics are usually people that do not feel secure about their own self worth. They usually strive for the approval of others. They tend to do whatever they can to please others, while hiding their own feelings. Food becomes their only source of comfort - but even that is not allowed. 7. Unconscious eater - Have you ever been nibbling on something for some time before you realize that you are actually eating? Have you had someone ask you, “Hey what are you eating or what did you have for dinner”, and you couldn’t tell them? Do you find yourself nibbling on food constantly while you are working, driving, talking on the phone, or watching TV without even thinking about what you are eating. Do you heap mounds of food on your plate? Do you put another bite into your mouth before finishing the last one? What are your fears? Are you allowed to have what you want? Can you fill up with enough? Can you sit down and accept all of what you need and deserve on one plate? We deserve all of the good things life has to offer, without having to perform for any of them. We dont earn worthiness, we decide we are already worthy and therefore accept more joy and abundance and love into us. We are deserving individuals by our very existence. I challenge you to take a look at your eating style. Look with non-judgement and without fear. Look without attempting to solve or get rid of the problem. Instead, be curious. What does your style of eating say about your right to be alive on earth, your right to have your needs met, your right to self-expression, your right to be powerful and empowered? By Mary Gardner They say they like a challenge, and they say they like a strong woman. So why is it that many of the challenging and strong women dine alone? It doesnt seem fair. The women who are competitive, strong, and worthy of the same income that men receive often times lose at love. They hide themselves in their work, and wonder what they are doing wrong? I saw a Dr. Phil episode yesterday that had a female helicopter fighter pilot on who was 33 and had never worn a dress. She was single and looking but didnt know why she wasnt landing a man. She was darling and open and guess what they gave her with Dr. Phils co-host for the day? Ms. Star Jones Reynolds treated her to A MAKE OVER! They put that lady in a dress for the first time in her life! They put her in heels! And even though she had never dressed up, she admitted that she loved grabbing back her femininity and feeling like a LADY!!! It was such a great lesson to see right there on TV. They showed a strong, successful and confidant woman in her professional life, become a lady right before our eyes. They cut and color treated her hair, they put on make up, and they went shopping to find outfits that were flattering and feminine. The smile on her face told it all she LOVED the new HER! And who wouldnt be attracted to that? Her face lit up the whole TV. She also admitted to Dr. Phil that she dressed that way to reject men BEFORE they rejected HER. She constantly had her guard up, and that was what was intimidating to men! It was DEFINITELY good TV that day! I remember going through a similar transformation. I was in my freshman year in college and hung out with all of the boys. They were my buds! But when it came time to go to a dance or event, I was sitting on the sidelines. I remember when one guy said some mean things to me that hurt my feelings and I knew He doesnt respect me. I knew then that I needed to take back the power and present myself as WHO I was on the inside, but not showing on the outside. I disappeared and stopped hanging out with the boys. I ate at other dining halls and hit the gym. I lost some weight, gave myself my own makeover and showed up about a month later as the NEW ME! And what happened? The boys FAWNED all over me! They asked me out for ice cream! They asked me out to the movies! They didnt want to just hang OUT with me anymore, they now wanted to DATE me. For the first time in my life, I was treated like a QUEEN and it felt great! Ive had to go through transformation many times since. There are times where its good to be one of the boys in business, and definitely times where its good to be all girl. When Im traveling on my TV tours with two 50lb suitcases, its GOOD to be all GIRL! I get help wherever I go and am gracious and appreciative and make all of the men who help me feel glad that they did. That is the secret! Men want to HELP women! They want to help take CARE of them. Its not so hard when you understand that most men want a woman who needs THEM! I spent an hour talking with a guy name Kyle on the treadmill yesterday at the YMCA. He is a house husband after working 20 years in TV. His wife is a very successful financial consultant who takes care of the finances. But he takes care of THEM. While shes smart at business, shes still his wife who he considers to be a sweet, dizzy little red head. And it was obvious that he completely ADORES her. It appears that his wife has learned the secret of making her man feel NEEDED. He dotes on her and takes care of her. So obviously, their relationship works. Im not saying that all of us who are strong and secure and confident need to become dizzy women. Not at all! Thats only a PART of our personalities!!! No, but I am suggesting that we tell the men in our lives that theyre great and thank them for the things that they do for us and PRAISE them when they go the extra mile. Everyone wants to be appreciated and its not a hard thing to do: Just look for the good in a person and acknowledge it! My new friend Kyle told me this: Men are superficial. Theyre easy to figure out. Theyre not that deep. They want 3 things: Food, Sex, and Sports; and not necessarily in that order. If they have the slightest bit of thought that they might get one of those things out of a woman, theyll do anything for her! I thought it was a little simplistic, but well worth thinking about. Of course my own husband disagreed and explained to me how he loves our whole life, our child, family and what we have together. I have to admit, I liked that analogy a lot better! But Kyle does speak for a majority of men and its worth keeping in the back of your mind if youre single and looking for a relationship! So if youre starting the New Year with the hopes of adding a terrific someone to your life, then think about doing a few simple things: 1. Get a make over so you feel terrific! 2. Next focus on others and let people know theyre special, and 3. Let your guard down to take a chance at love. If you give them a chance to see the beautiful and feminine creature that you are inside, just how are they going to be able to resist you? My bet is that they WONT!! It truly is the worlds best kept secret job First of all, there is some confusion about copywriting…let me dispel the most common myth: What Copywriting is NOT Copywriting is not Copyrighting. Copyrighting is the act of securing the copyright on a piece of work. A copyright is just the legal right to reproduce the work. What Copywriting IS… Wikipedia, the online encyclopedia defines copywriting or the act of writing copy as: Copywriting is the process of writing the words that promote a person, business, opinion, or idea. It may be used as plain text, as a radio or television advertisement, or in a variety of other media. I agree with this definition, but copywriting goes much deeper than that…It is both a science and an art. Where You Can Find Examples of Copy Its generally used in advertising and marketing and is primarily used to sell goods and services, but it is also is used to communicate with people. You can find it in all ads that you see everyday… That includes: the Internet, newspapers, magazines, billboards and radio…on the package of things you buy, on the back of your milk carton and even the bible! More on that later… The Problem With Copywriting and Why Its So Important The act of copywriting is the most mis-understood skill in any business, yet at the same time its the most important. Heres why: Its really just words on a piece of paper. It makes it even more mis-understood when a copywriter asks for thousands of dollars and it only took them a week to prepare it. But, When written correctly and sent to the right people, it has been known to turn a mediocre business into an industry giant very rapidly. Your words, reproduced thousands of times, leverage your message to thousands of people…and it costs only fractions of a dollar per letter to distribute it. A well crafted, persuasive letter is one of the most powerful forces in the world today. You know, while the National Enquirer wont even win the Nobel Prize in Literature, they write with simple language and very effectively target their audience…they have over 15 million readers after all. With all the complaints they get, no one has ever complained they write too clear. Words on a piece of paper have been known to create wars (or prevent them), to sell millions of dollars in goods, to express emotions and so on… I said earlier that copywriting was in the bible…St. Paul, the Catholic saint, used copywriting to communicate the word of God to other people. He spread the message without ever having to be there personally. He was one of the earliest copywriters. The presidents speech writer is a copy writer…he or she has to be very careful about the words they use. The Role of a Copywriter The role of the Copywriter is to write copy. Simple. To write copy, a copywriter must research their a) intended audience and b) their subject matter. Then they must put pen to paper and create a message that will communicate their subject matter to their intended audience. The copywriter must also pay attention to how the copy a) Looks: if the copy looks too overwhelming, no one will read it. b) Flows: if the ideas and words in the copy connect together properly. In the end, what does a copywriter produce? The length and type of copy can vary…they can produce letters 30 pages long or as short as one sentence (or a word or two). Writing 30 pages is definitely a skill, where if you want to sell something, it has to be extremely interesting so that someone will read it… And writing a sentence? Sometimes that can take months of digging into volume after volume of dry product data and material to uncover the one phrase that can best describe the product. Every word counts and is worth its weight in gold In both cases, every word counts…the copywriter must agonize over every word because not only are you paying for the space you use (in a magazine for example) to distribute the copy, but the very words themselves can either persuade your audience to listen to you and buy your products…or completely turn them off. Because of the complexities and the needs for copywriters…there has emerged a wide range of copywriters…they range from artists and English majors to people in sales. Millions of people, just like you, are depressed, but dont realize it. Depression and insomnia can and should be treated. This article will help you to better understand your condition and hopefully shed some light on a seemingly very dark situation. So How Does Depression and Insomnia Fit Together? Sleep disturbances and depression often go hand in hand. Troubled sleep is considered to be an indication of certain mood disorders. It is believed that more than 75% of people who are depressed also experience insomnia, which is a difficulty falling asleep or, most often, staying asleep. Early morning awakening is another evidence of destructive depression. Although, not common, some people who are suffering from depression and insomnia waste as much as 20% of their time sleeping! Can Medication Help with Depression and Insomnia? There very few studies on the real effectiveness of treatments for depression and insomnia. In general, medication treatments take on four different methods. The First Depression and Insomnia Method: - The most popular anti-depressants on the market today are products such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Celexa. These medications are usually effective and tolerable. Many people claim they see significant improvements in their sleep patterns and experience relief in their overall mood. The Second Depression and Insomnia Method: - The older anti-depressants such as Elavil, Pamelor, and Doxepin may be somewhat sedating, but they have more serious side effects, and can be lethal in overdose. The Third Depression and Insomnia Method: - Some doctors use an SSRI in coalition with a low dose of a sedating antidepressant (such as Trazodone) or a short acting hypnotic (such as Ambien, Sonata, or Temazepam). The advantages of using this approach is that the combination of medicines used to treat the depression can also address the sleep difficulty, and the specialist has the option of abandoning the sleep drug while continuing to treat the depression. Essential Oil Adulteration–Know What To Look For

By Lisa Barger There are several ways unscrupulous manufacturers can cheat you out of getting your money’s worth when it comes to essential oils. And even the most experienced aromatherapists can’t detect some of them without a laboratory test. The four most common ways manufacturers modify essential oils are: AdulterationDilutionDegradationRectification Dilution is the process of “stretching” an oil by diluting it in some type of carrier. The United States has few laws specifically for essential oils and this allows manufacturers to sell diluted essential oils as “pure” or “natural”. Usually dilution is done to save money and dilution of essential oils isn’t necessarily a bad thing. If you’re using essential oils mainly in the bath or for massage, you may not need botanically pure products–or the expense that accompanies them. Degradation isn’t so much an attempt to cheat you as it is an indication of the manufacturer’s storage practices. Oxygen, heat and sunlight can all cause the essential oils to break down, chemically speaking, over time. Degredation mainly affects the scent of the oil but, in rare instances, can make the essential oil more toxic. Pine essential oil, for example, becomes a more likely dermal irritant when stored incorrectly. Adulteration is similar to dilution in that an essential oil is “stretched” with another, cheaper oil but unlike dilution, adulteration is an outright attempt to defraud consumers. A perfect example involves Bourbon geranium, a highly sought-after and very expensive essential oil. To save money, manufacturers will sometimes “cut” the geranium with less desirable varieties from other countries or with essential oils from completely different species–without disclosing the adulteration on the label. “Rectification” refers to the practice of re-distilling essential oils a second, third or fourth time. Sometimes rectification is done to remove undesirable constituents (eucalyptus is a good example of this) or to change the chemical components. (Ylang Ylang is often re-distilled multiple times and many aromatherapists consider the third or fourth distilling to produce the best-smelling oil.) Rectification isn’t necessarily bad but it can significantly alter the scent. By Trevor Kugler In my opinion, the most important thing to remember while river fishing is not to spook the water that you’re about to fish. I’ve seen entirely too many anglers do this very thing. For example, they’ll wade 1/4 of the way out into the river and begin fishing. Thus leaving themselves standing in the very water they probably should have fished first. The first tip is: When river fishing, remember to work the area that you want to fish in “sections”. Don’t just jump in and start fishing in the spot that you think looks the best. And don’t just fish the water directly below where you’re wading. Make your casts into the current then let your live bait or lure flow with the current until it is finally below you, keeping your line as tight as possible the entire time. Repeat this step while varying the length of your casts in order to cover the water entirely. The second tip is: When river fishing, while using live bait, the bottom is your friend. As my mentor used to say, “if you’re not getting snagged, you’re not fishing in the right place!” The goal is to bounce you’re live bait off of the bottom as it drifts naturally through the current (JRW Gang Hooks are the most natural way to present a worm in my opinion). This is accomplished by adjusting the number of split shot sinkers you add to your line. Start with two and make a cast. If you don’t feel bottom throughout your drift, add another on the next cast and so on. Once you’re bouncing bottom, you’ll be able to feel it. And with practice, you’ll be able to tell the difference between the bottom and a bite with ease. The third tip is: Look for deeper water. For the most part you’ll want to spend 80% of your time on any given river fishing trip, fishing the deeper parts of the river. Deeper edges and riffles and of course pools are where a majority of the fish will congregate(especially in hotter weather. You don’t want to get caught spending 80% of your time fishing the shallow riffles and 20% of your time fishing the beautiful pool below the riffles. And the deeper edges along most riffles (especially in the bend of the river) are generally more productive as well. Just remember: for the most part, deeper is better. The fourth tip is: Match your fishing gear to the type of fish that your fishing for. I’ve seen all too many anglers out on my local stream fishing for rainbow trout with gear that would enable them to hook and land a small mako shark! My personal preference is a five foot ultralight rod and reel spooled with 4 lb. test. If this would be too “small” for you, a 6 foot light action rod spooled with 6lb. test would suffice, but any larger is complete overkill. If you’re going river fishing for fall steelhead, obviously your going to need larger fishing gear. Just make sure to match it to what you’re fishing for. I don’t need to see any more shark fishermen on my local trout stream. These tips should save you time, and with any luck, help you catch more fish as well. So get out there and do just that. There are three markets: 1) “I’ve decided to buy something, and I’m actively looking.” 2) “I’ve been thinking of buying something but have been putting it off.” 3) “I didn’t realize your product/service could do that for me - affordably.” Scenario #1 is usually for commodities - products and services with known cost and benefit. These are price-sensitive sales, and how to add value is thoroughly documented elsewhere. This market is ready, willing and able. The vast majority of business transactions are done this way because there is a built up demand with market share being the goal - a piece of the pie. Scenario #2 is where they are willing and able, but they just haven’t bothered to pull the trigger yet; they aren’t “ready.” This is a market where good ads inspire them to act because of “special offers.” They may need an offer along the lines of, “Buy today and we’ll throw in a_____ .” This market does not have to be as price sensitive as the ones who “call you” if you structure it. Get them to come to you, or, go to them and you’ve solved 75% of the sales effort and eliminated 75% of the chance of them shopping for price. Helpful seminars work well - as opposed to pure selling sessions. Both scenarios 1 and 2 are for mature markets where the heavier margins have been leveled out by competitive bidding. Scenario #3 offers a whole new ballgame. You get new values that they weren’t aware of. There are a lot of people who are both open-minded to believing the claims of legitimate and verifiable benefits, and, like to be frontrunners who try ‘What’s new;” it has a tonic effect on boredom. Depending upon both the margin per sale and if it has inherent repeat business, you need to choose which marketing effort is best. Direct mail, radio and telemarketing can be used to these ends - a combination of all 3, if ifs affordable, is best. One thing about telemarketing: not only is it two-way communication - which demands an immediate decision - but, you find things. This means that while you are looking for a sale of a specific product/service, if you ask, it’s amazing what else falls out that you won’t actually be looking for. These discoveries were on their minds to begin with - it’s the best of both worlds of scenarios 2 and 3.
