How Your Arrest Records Might Haunt You

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By Amit Mehta Arrest records pertain to the documents kept by the state that an individual was taken into custody by a law enforcement official. Also included in the definition of arrest documents are those instances wherein individuals were detained, questioned, held for investigation and then later tried for any offense. It is important to make the distinction between arrest records and conviction records since the latter includes the actual conviction following an arrest. Conviction records will include in detail the fines, years of imprisonment, pardons, and other verdicts cast upon an individual following an arrest. Remember that not all arrests will lead to convictions since there are instances wherein charges are dropped. Who Has Interest in Arrest Records? People access arrest records to find out if someone has the propensity for violating the law. However, there should never be any generalizations made regarding the reputation or the character of a person based solely on an arrest record. You need to keep in mind that arrest documents can actually be incorrect or unjust (because the individual did not go through legal proceedings that determine one’s innocence or guilt). Keep in mind too cases of false or mistaken identities which may bring blame to someone totally innocent of any wrongdoing. More often than not, employers will request for your arrest records before they decide to hire you. Actually, your potential employer has the right to ask you about pending convictions at the time of your job application, but cannot ask you about arrests that have not lead to convictions. Another reason why arrest records are acquired is for court proceedings. For instance, these documents may be asked for to aid in proper sentencing (i.e., checking if the accused has prior misdemeanors). Several counts on arrest documents could prove to be highly detrimental for you since a judge or jury is highly unlikely to let you off with a light sentence once they see that you have a tendency for disobeying the law. Regardless of who may take a look at your arrest records, you need to see it for yourself so that you are ready to explain and justify its contents. There are a number of websites on the Internet that offer state repositories for your perusal, which can save you a lot of costs. Since these are state repositories, there will be no need to go from one county to another to look for arrest records. As long as you are able to provide the precise personal information required, getting to arrest records should not pose a problem for you. Manually obtaining arrest records by going to the county office and filling out application forms may even take as long as thirty days of processing. If you choose to go with online arrest records, you can receive your request in as little as three days. Make sure that you are aware of the basic laws of your state regarding arrest records and count yourself lucky if you reside in one of those states that restrict the discharging of non-conviction records to the public. Skeletal Muscle Relaxants Uses, Efficacy, and Side Effects

Friday, February 29th, 2008

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Yury_Bayarski] Yury Bayarski Skeletal muscle relaxants are a heterogeneous group of medications. As a class, they are structurally and pharmacologically diverse. Muscle relaxants are used to treat two different types of underlying conditions: spasticity from upper motor neuron syndromes muscular pain or spasms from peripheral musculoskeletal conditions Although muscle relaxants have by convention been classified into one group, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved only a few medications in this class for treatment of spasticity. The remainder are approved for treatment of musculoskeletal conditions. Drugs classified as skeletal muscle relaxants include: baclofen (Lioresal) carisoprodol (Soma) chlorzoxazone (Paraflex) cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) dantrolene (Dantrium) metaxalone (Skelaxin) methocarbamol (Robaxin) orphenadrine (Norflex) tizanidine (Zanaflex) Muscle relaxants for treatment of spasticity Spasticity is a state of increased muscular tone with exaggeration of the tendon reflexes. Some of the more common conditions associated with spasticity and requiring treatment include multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, cerebral palsy, and poststroke syndrome. In many patients with these conditions, spasticity can be disabling and painful with a marked effect on functional ability and quality of life. The upper motor neuron syndrome is a complex of signs and symptoms that can be associated with exaggerated cutaneous reflexes, autonomic hyperreflexia, dystonia, contractures, paresis, lack of dexterity, and fatigability. Spasticity from the upper motor neuron syndrome can result from a variety of conditions affecting the cortex or spinal cord. Only baclofen, dantrolene, and tizanidine are approved for treatment of spasticity. There is fair evidence that baclofen and tizanidine are roughly equivalent for efficacy in patients with spasticity, but insufficient evidence to determine the efficacy of dantrolene compared to baclofen or tizanidine. Tizanidine is associated with more dry mouth and baclofen with more weakness. Muscle relaxants for treatment of musculoskeletal conditions Muscle spasm is defined as a sudden involuntary contraction of one or more muscle groups and is usually an acute condition associated with muscle strain (partial tear of a muscle) or sprain (partial or complete rupture of a ligament). Common musculoskeletal conditions causing tenderness and muscle spasms include fibromyalgia, tension headaches, myofascial pain syndrome, and mechanical low back pain or neck pain. If muscle spasm is present in these conditions, it is related to local factors involving the affected muscle groups. The skeletal muscle relaxants carisoprodol, chlorzoxazone, cyclobenzaprine, metaxalone, methocarbamol, and orphenadrine are approved for treatment of musculoskeletal disorders. Clinical studies show, that cyclobenzaprine, carisoprodol, orphenadrine, and tizanidine are effective compared to placebo in patients with musculoskeletal conditions (primarily acute back or neck pain). Cyclobenzaprine has been evaluated in the most clinical trials and has consistently been found to be effective. Efficacy Most studies have shown the skeletal muscle relaxants to be more effective than placebo in the treatment of acute painful musculoskeletal disorders and muscle spasm, while efficacy was less consistent when treating chronic disorders. When muscle relaxants were used alone, they were not consistently superior to simple analgesics in relieving pain. When the skeletal muscle relaxants were used in combination with analgesics, pain relief is superior to either agent used alone. Studies have suggested that these drugs are effective, have tolerable side effects, and can be an adjunct in the treatment of painful musculoskeletal conditions with associated muscle spasm. No studies have documented superior efficacy of one skeletal muscle relaxant over another. Side Effects and Adverse reactions All skeletal muscle relaxants may cause sedation (drowsiness, dizziness). Baclofen may cause severe central nervous system depression with cardiovascular collapse and respiratory failure. Dantrolene has a potential for hepatotoxicity. Overt hepatitis has been most frequently observed between the third and twelfth months of therapy. Risk of hepatic injury appears to be greater in women, in patients over 35 years of age and in patients taking other medications in addition to dantrolene. Carisoprodol has some potential for dependence and withdrawal symptoms. Cyclobenzaprine, closely related to the tricyclic antidepressants, causes the expected lethargy and anticholinergic side effects, and may have some toxicity in overdose and in combination with other substances. Tizanidine may cause low blood pressure, but this may be controlled by starting with a low dose and increasing it gradually. The drug may rarely cause liver damage. Methocarbamol and chlorzoxazone may cause harmless color changes in urine - orange or reddish-purple with chlorzoxazone and purple, brown, or green with methocarbamol. The urine will return to its normal color when the patient stops taking the medicine. Divorced? Alone? Before You Set Sail Into The Sunset, Is Your Dock Built?

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

By Patricia Hubbard All too often separated, divorced or widowed people fall into a new relationship too quickly. Before they grieve properly, because of loneliness, a need to be affirmed or even as a result of financial considerations. They either breathe a warm and fuzzy sigh of excitement or just do not think. It feels better than being alone or the haze of love sets in, obliterating common sense and the ramifications of this new life. The relationship is fine at first. The glow of being someones special one feels wonderful and all is well with the universe. But then, what happens when disenchantment sets in for one or the other partner? Gradually partnerships begin to disintegrate and the pain of loneliness returns. Memories and comparisons are made with the old spouse and the sniping beginsanother broken relationship! One or both are thrown back onto the abyss of anger, disbelief, resentment, hurt and even self-hatred. The process of grief must be begun and tolerated again. It is not an easy undertaking. How does one avoid this unnecessary journey? Avoiding that old painful trek into loneliness requires a great deal of self-caring, a lot of determination and a plan! You plan for a birthday party, a date, a trip to the beach. As calculated as it sounds, why wouldnt you plan for a relationship, a journey into your future and eventually, your happiness? Before you take your expensive yacht out into the sunset, wouldnt you need a dock to return to? Why gamble with your life.your happiness? Is your life more important than the above-mentioned events? Self-love is important! The need for feeling loved and appreciated is a human need, very natural and proper. The desire to be loved comes from God. The desire to give love comes from God, The Original Lover, the Creator of all mankind.Without a healthy love for one’s self, there is not much hope for a successful union. To love yourself, you have to know yourself. Individuals perception of love can be different, depending on their childhood familial experiences and concepts. If love and acceptance did not exist, it would be difficult for one to conceive of them as being lovable and will expect less in return. If two people come from a different perspective of what love consists of, problems could evolve.Talk about that. BUILDING THE DOCK Finding a plan begins with self-examination. If you cant stand being alone, and dont enjoy your own company, how can you expect someone else to love being alone with you? You have to love yourself if you expect someone else to love you. The way to love yourself is to get to know who you are, good, bad or indifferent. Making an actual list of priorities and goals and knowing what you want and need, will help you feel fulfilled. Discovering your talents and abilities can be an adventure. Are you adventurous or a fraidy cat? Why not try some new things? You may find that something you tried is not for you, but at least youll know it from your own experience. Anne decided to challenge her fear of roller coasters. She did it twice, was terrified and decided two times was enough, but had the pride of knowing that at 60 years old she had challenged herself and won. She went on to canoeing with an experienced canoeing friend and literally fell in love with it. She doesnt swim either. Her self-esteem raised a few notches because she conquered fears that were nonsensical. Why not try new things, you may find that acting young again will make you feel young and free. Age has nothing to do with joy. Other suggestions for getting to know who you are. Make lists of: Your interests, sports, reading, travel, etc. Your value system, trust, honesty, acceptance, family Your good points, understanding, good listener, loving, patient Your lesser abilities, impatient, anger easily, spend too much Your hopes and dreams for the future. A family, home, better job, kids Do you know how to have fun? How? What are the things that make you laugh? Movies, people, silliness Is religion important to you? How important? Where does God fit into your life? Does He fit in? This could be a deal breaker If you could not reach your goals, would it take away from your general Happiness? How adaptable are you? How much compromising are you willing to do? On religion, money issues, work issues, politics Make a collage from pictures from old magazines of your hopes, dreams and wishes. You will be amazed, down the road, at how many of them come true. Final points to consider Do not commit to a person who is married, not divorced or still emotionally attached to another partner-this kind of commitment can lead to heartache. Living together to see if you are compatible is not the answer. Without commitment, there is no sense of responsibility to the relationship. Regardless of what the modern magazines, TV and attitudes proclaim, it either results in broken hearts or an extended journey to nowhere. You are better than that and deserve more. If you find someone you feel comfortable with, become friends first. Learn as much as you can about each other before the thought of commitment enters the situation. If you cant like the person or something about them unnerves you, how could you possibly share every day with them? Dont be rushed, pushed, or shamed into committing if you are not sure this is the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. You already know how it feels to fail at marriage, if you are divorced, so why put yourself through that pain again? WANT to be a better person. Jack Nicholson, in the movie, AS GOOD AS IT GETS, said of his intended, She makes me want to be a better man! What a wonderful compliment!!! If you truly love someone, you will be willing to wait for all things to come together to make the relationship right. This only can be accomplished when you are mature enough to recognize that love is desiring the best for the other person, not just yourself. (They must show the same consideration for you.) You will be a better person when you come to this realization. Its possible that you may even find that the truest love will be to let the other person go. An old 70s poster on my daughters bedroom door read: If you love something, set it free, if it comes back to you, its yours, if it doesnt, it was never meant to be. Respect for self, caring love and sincere concern for each other, are the stepping-stones for a lasting relationship. Taking time to build your own dock, first, means you care enough to give your very best self, but also to expect to receive the very best. Remember, with no dock to return to, youll just be drifting aimlessly, in the water. Pat Hubbard 618 Minute Men Rd. How to Write a Paper in One Night

Wednesday, February 27th, 2008

By Anthony Chatfield Being in college is a chore. It takes a lot of work, carefully planned over the course of a week, or a month, or a quarter to make sure everything gets done with the full attention it deserves.are you laughing yet? No one puts in the time required to properly complete their college work. No, rather its a rush at the end every week or two to complete a 10 page paper or learn 200 years of ancient Roman history overnight. You all do it, I did it. Its probably a better training skill than all the random stuff you learn, because honestly in real life do you think youll have the time to sit and schedule everything that pops into your life ahead of time. Yeahthought not. Anyways, for those of you just entering college from the snore inducing boredom and ease of High School, youre probably incredibly unprepared for the shear amount of work youll have to pull out in the last second. Im not saying its easy just because youll procrastinate. No, its still hard. You really should take the time to do your work properly. You just wont, and so you need to learn how to procrastinate. Its a fine art, in which I feel Ive become something of a Renoir. First off, make sure youve got all your books and notes. If you dont go to class, which is entirely likely for those of the procrastinating ilk, make sure you get them from a classmate. Also, double check and make sure your professor doesnt have a website. Theyll usually tell you, but more than once Ive found a classs notes sitting in an archive online, especially now that 90% of them put everything they teach you into PowerPoint presentations and then just read it to you for an hour every day (yeah, lazy). Its usually only an extra 30 seconds out of their day to put the stuff online, and then when they receive twenty plus emails a week asking for the lecture notes, they only have to point you to the website. Well, some are a bit more facetious about their pupils not even bothering to come to class and dont openly offer said notes. However, for sick students and whatnot, theyll put them online to save paper and all it takes is a couple of quick google searches or an email to a sick student and youve got your notes. Orjust ask a classmate. But then youre relying on them actually paying attention. You should have your books too. If you never bothered buying them because you would just take notes or go to sparknotes, then youd better go buy them, because BSing your way through a paper is going to take at least some resources. You cant magically ascertain the information from just being near smarter people. School would be much easier if that were the case. So, sit down and start reading. Yup, youre going to be reading a lot the night before your work is due. But, this is better than doing all the assigned reading, because now youre searching for specific information. Instead of general learning (which would only stick around and clutter up your brain later) youre doing targeted research. An eighth the time, and none of that pesky remembering it. You should have your topic at least. If not, start surfing message boards and snag one from someone smarter than you. Dont ever take their work though. The last thing you need is to get kicked out of school for plagiarism. Its lazy and embarrassing. Steal concepts, but never words. And if you steal a concept from the middle of their work, cite them. Your university will not take kindly to cheating. Youll be so red taped and black listed, you might as well go and get an application at Jack in the Box, and trust me you dont want to work in fast food. You cant procrastinate now. Youve done that for three weeks, so Im sorry (I know it hurts), but in terms of actual physical writing time, youll need at least three hours to type your paper, which speaks nothing of writing it. And writing it involves finding quotations and that ever so pesky chore of thinking. Sit down, grab an energy drink and a bag of chips, close your door and put some headphones on. No television, and put your phone on the charger. Now open up the word processor and just start typing. You probably think you have writers block. But, writers block is completely unrelated to having absolutely no idea what youre talking about. Youre stuck with the second one right now, so just keep on reading on your topic and finding bits and pieces to put together. The thing here that most people dont realize is that the standard writing process isnt in effect for you. Youre not drafting, or brainstorming. Thats the stuff you should have done two weeks ago. No, youre writing your paper, so make sure youve got your idea and just start writing and keep writing until you create a thesis somehow. I usually start as broad as possible, and just start talking about something. If Im writing about the Hero Quest of Pip in Great Expectations, I start by talking about Greek Mythology and the origin of the classical hero. Working my way down, Ill talk about the modern hero, then about the alterations made in the industrial age, and how Dickens rewrote archetypes for his comedy, and finally start talking about Pip. By now you should have a general idea about what you want to say. It might be general but youll clarify in your next few paragraphs, and then come back and rewrite the first paragraph. Paragraph one is almost always trash. Especially with this method, because your weary, angered professor after reading 30 of these lovely last minute essays will put a big red X through anything that doesnt have to do with your paper, and those first few grasping sentences are completely unrelated. But now you can start stealing from the text. Snag a quote and make a point. Snag another quote and make another point. If your thesis ends up as something incredibly broad and useless like Pips quest from anonymity and worthlessness into a position of wealth and power in London mirrors the classical hero quests, but works through Dickensian views of industrial England youre still good. It sounds intelligent and has a lot of promise. Now just find specific quotes and build a narrative. Start at the beginning of his change, talk about his childhood, then go to when he changes, then compare to the Hero quests of old, then show how theyre different. Almost any paper, if written quickly can boil down to something simple and incredibly easy to write, a compare and contrast paper. You choose a prominent theme from the book you just read. Find a source that mirrors or better yet foils this theme and compare the two. Dont just list how theyre different though. Thats high school stuff right there. Youll want to write exactly how the outside source changes what you think of your book. It sounds hard but jus think about it. Youve got Great Expectations. It has a main character who goes on a kind of quest. Now you have a classic archetype of which there are hundreds of sources to draw on. You take a basic outline of this archetype and apply it to Pips quest and how he fits it, and when he doesnt fit it. Now you finish your paper by describing why he doesnt fit it sometimes. Which gets you back to the Dickensian views part. Youve just pretty much written a paper that says, Pips quest is classic but different because Dickens was writing about a different time in human history. Incredibly simple; youre not telling anyone anything new, but three things will guarantee a good grade. 1. If you write well at all. Youve got to be a halfway decent writer, which if youre in college Ill assume you are. 2. Professors love outside references. It shows initiative and research and makes it seem like you did extra work (which you didnt). Ive written papers overnight without drafts and without ever reading them back to myself and received comments that I must have spent hours working on it. Not quite. 3. Confidence in your assertions. Say everything with absolute certainty, and back it up with a quote. Do this enough and even if youre wrong, itll seem like youve made a decent point, which gets you brownie points. Writing a paper is a tumultuous task but its also a scalable task that can be made incredibly quick and easy if you know how. My second to last quarter of college, I wrote three papers in two days; two of them 10 pages, and one 25 pages, and received a 3.8, and two 3.7s. Its a matter of confidence and above all else an unmitigated fearlessness to be incredibly lazy. I’m a self avowed unemployed writer, working on semi-constant basis to try and overcome the need to go and work a real job. I’ve written more than 200 articles and reviews and am constantly scouring the internet for any and all excuses and methods to make myself less dependent on corporate pay days. Banquet Catering

Tuesday, February 26th, 2008

By Betty Durden A banquet is defined by the Standard College Dictionary as: 1. A sumptuous feast. 2. A formal or ceremonial dinner, often followed by speeches. Indeed, banquet catering is among a league of its own in the catering industry. Generally, banquet-style functions entertain a large quantity of guests and consist of large round tables that seat eight to ten persons. Banquets are popular, but not limited to, wedding receptions and corporate events or parties. Food service styles vary from informal buffets in which guests prepare their own plates from a large selection of food to pre-determined meals served to each guest individually by a hired wait staff. A catering company should be able to provide a consultation to help any event or party planner figure out what kind of service would be most appropriate for the occasion. There are considerations to ponder before approaching a potential caterer for your banquet style event, namely the kitchen of your event or party location. Examine the kitchen of your event location. The kitchen will need to provide the space and equipment to meet banquet service requirements. In banquet catering, the prep, cooking, and serving happens all at once. Depending on the size and nature of the banquet, a small 100-to 200-square-foot station for catering with the right equipment can make a huge difference and ensure that the kitchen staff remains happy, productive and efficient. In regards to the costs of banquet catering, pricing is dependent on what type of event style is used, whether it is a formal sit-down dinner or a casual cocktail party. Typically, banquet caterers will offer a simple pricing guideline based on staffing, equipment, and menu requirements of the event, with plenty of room for creativity. You and your caterer can be as innovative as you like when considering the many banquet catering options. A few options to consider include the amount of staff to meet the needs of the guests, the decorations, the linens, and centerpieces used. The overall objective is to host a successful event and a good caterer can assist you in planning all the details. What Do I Need To Take An Online NursingCourse?

Monday, February 25th, 2008

By Mansi Aggarwal All of the online nursing schools are different and in large part this works to the advantage of the new student. Few people realize that an online nursing degree is pretty much the same as any traditional school. They offer all the same type of degrees and variations of courses that the traditional schools offer and they do it with a fraction of the cost of a traditional school would charge for the same thing. This has made online schools so much more popular. Not to mention the fact that these schools can offer the better and up to date classes that the traditional schools have a hard time keeping up on. Budgetary restraints are more prevalent at traditional land based schools. The first thing you need is a computer with an internet connection. This is the most crucial part of any online school as they cannot teach you other than through email and online discourse. Many of the schools of this type ask that you have a high speed internet connection such as DSL or cable broad band. This helps the students to better keep up with all that is going on and increases the download times many times over. This is important, as many of the classes require software and assignments to be downloaded over the time of the course. Although if you do not have cable or DSL, dial-up is still fine to use. You may also need to purchase some books for the courses that you will take. This is similar to a traditional school in this respect. There is much more to the online nursing school than just working with a computer. The work from the book is crucial and sets up the base knowledge for most of the other courses that you will be required to take to earn your degree. The books are sometimes available locally but there are times when you can also purchase them from a virtual bookstore through the school. The prices of the books vary by course and school but most of them can be resold to recoup some of the investment. Some of the courses that are required through the online nursing schools have prerequisites that need to be met before you can take the class. The first one being a high school diploma before you are even accepted to the school. After that there are some courses that you will not be able to take until you have taken lower level courses first. This is a common practice even in traditional schools, as some courses require some base knowledge to efficiently teach the course. More important than anything, you will need a desire to work hard and learn. Working with an online nursing school requires personal dedication and forethought. The ability to work independently is also crucial as the professors may not be available at all times. This means that you will need to work on your own and complete the required work without much guidance. You will also need to choose a suitable land campus. While the bulk of your degree in nursing can be completed online, you will need to take part in clinicals, which take place in person. Special Children and Church - How to Help

Sunday, February 24th, 2008

By Mary Gusman Going to church for many families today means that the parents sit in the main service while their children are sent to childrens church. Maybe that works fine for some families. In fact, Ive heard many parents say that they were glad to get a break. However, there is an entire population of children and families for which there is no place in the majority of todays churches — families who have children with special needs. Autism alone impacts as many as 1 out of every 166 children in America today according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). So what are the churches doing for these children and their families who really need some extra support? Sadly, many do nothing but ignore these families and their children, while some even reject them. Families who have a child with autism or other special needs are overwhelmed. Daily life is exhausting. Leaving the house is an ordeal. Going to church is, unfortunately, often out of the question. How can we expect a child with autism to sit quietly in a church service? We cant. How can we expect a child with autism to be left in a large group of other children for childrens church? We cant. As the parent of an autistic child, I have learned how to survive the daily stress of caring for my sons needs, but it seems too much to ask from a church. I know other parents who feel this way as well. We can choose to just stay out of church or attend without our special needs child. We can attempt to have our child sit in the service with us which is usually very stressful as we deal with the stares and comments from people who dont understand. We can stay with our child in the childrens church class but then we never get to be a part of the church service ourselves. None of these options seem to meet the needs of our family. Perhaps if more churches took an interest in learning how they could be of help to families of children with special needs, they could then offer appropriate assistance. Any outreach to these special families first requires understanding what they are dealing with. A video presentation has been developed by Autism Speaks that offers a glimpse into what families who have children with autism deal with on a daily basis. This video can be viewed online at: http://www.autismspeaks.org/sponsoredevents/autism_every_day.php Churches need to welcome all children including those with special needs. There is a huge ministry opportunity being missed as the number of families impacted by disabilities like autism continues to rise. It is my prayer that churches would help to bear the physical, emotional, and financial burdens that these families carry. If churches dont know what to do, all they have to do is ask. A great first step would be to have some volunteers offer to be trained by the parents so they could help out in the familys home and in church services and related activities. Perhaps the church could ask if there are any financial expenses for therapies that they can help with. At the very least, just offering a word of encouragement to a weary parent and letting them know that you are praying for them helps families not feel that they are all alone. Through supportive words and actions, churches can demonstrate the love of God through touching the lives of these special children and their families. Food - The Amazing Egg

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

By Michael Russell Where would we be without eggs? From the common hen’s egg to the slightly rarer goose, duck and quail’s eggs. Eggs are a part of our daily diet (except for those of us who embrace the Vegan philosophy and lifestyle) and are a major source of protein, vitamins and minerals such as B6, B12, iron, calcium, riboflavin, folic acid and potassium. In the past, cardiologists encouraged heart patients to exclude eggs from their diet because of the perceived cholesterol levels. There now seems to be some argument about this, with some saying that little of the cholesterol from eggs is actually absorbed into the body and that it is mostly “good” cholesterol. However, with the prevalence of the prescription of cholesterol reducing drugs, it seems unlikely that a few eggs will do much harm, but that is between the patient and their doctor. The number of dishes and indeed, whole meals, which can be made with eggs is numerous. Of course there are the normal omelettes, fried, scrambled, boiled and poached varieties, often eaten for breakfast, but a hard-boiled egg can liven up the most boring salad and is delicious mashed up with mayonnaise in a sandwich (particularly with cress). Few cakes would be complete without eggs as they aid binding and rising. They are the major ingredient in mayonnaise (the yolk), meringue (the white), custards such as quiche, crme brule and crme caramel and of course, the souffl. The most important property of eggs used in sauces and custards is their ability to emulsify (stabilise or blend) because they contain lecithin. An unstable emulsion would be vinaigrette dressing, so considered because the oil and vinegar will separate, so when making mayonnaise, it is the egg yolk (and mustard, which has similar properties) which holds the olive oil, lemon juice and vinegar together to make the smooth, creamy, end result. The major part of the egg white or albumen is water, but it is the protein content which enables the white to retain air by forming a film around it when beaten, thus resulting in the light and airy dishes which are mousses, souffls and meringues. It is possible, however, to over beat an egg so that it won’t retain air and the result will be a rather soggy or heavy dish and in the case of a souffl, it just won’t rise. Eggs go with many things but an impressive looking and easy to prepare dinner party starter is this: Butter the inside of a miniature pudding basin or mould (you will need one for each person). Match the size of the bottom of the mould with a cutting ring and cut pieces of toast of that size. Use ready sliced brown or white bread. Put the toast in the bottom of the mould. Line the inside of the mould with smoked salmon, overlapping the toast and making sure that there are no gaps. Break an egg into each mould, season with salt and pepper and a few chopped chives and put a spoonful of thick cream in each one. Bake in a bain-marie in the oven at a medium heat for 10 - 15 minutes. This depends on the heat of the oven, the size of the eggs and whether you like your egg yolks to be set or still slightly runny. It might be wise to try this for yourself, before that important dinner. Turn the moulds out onto plates and garnish with watercress, rocket or other leaves. What Exactly Are Online Dating Sim Games?

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

By Jack Strom There’s a new trend growing in the online dating world: Simulated dating games. Yes, in an effort to make online dating more fun for members, and more interactive than just chat, email or even video conferencing, some dating sites have started offering sim dating games too. Online sim dating games work a lot like standard online role playing games do. You log into the dating site or service that offers the sim game, and create your charactor. Then you’re able to walk around in a virtual 3D world, meeting other members of the online dating site. There’s much more to it though. Since this is an interactive game as well as a dating service, you’re able to do all sorts of things such as have your sim charactor go to the gym and work out. Or buy new clothes. You can even have your sim find a job so they’ll have money to take others out on virtual dates. As with other online games of this nature, you’re able to fully control your dating sim too. You can have them stroll around the city, stop and talk to other sims, go to sleep so their energy is replaced, and more. And since these games are designed for dating purposes, you still have all the functionality of standard online dating services. You can meet new people, get to know them, and maybe find that one true love. The biggest difference of course, is that you can actually go on a virtual date inside the online dating sim game world. Assuming you’ve earned enough money with your virtual job, or completed whatever tasks were needed to earn points, you can ask other members out to coffee, to dinner and a movie, or maybe just see if they want to take a stroll through the city with you… or your sim. There are several types of online dating sim games cropping up. Some allow you to simply play with friends, while others allow you to log onto a server which has virtual sim dates from around the world. You can also stick to just those daters who are in the same country you are. Apparently there are a wide range of sim dating games to choose from. Some allow you to try the service for free so you’re able to see how you like it before having to pay. Some say these online dating sim games add an extra something to the whole online dating experience. Instead of having to visit a chat room and wait for others to come along for instance, you can simply stroll your sim charactor through a busy part of the virtual world. It sounds like these online dating games could be a lot of fun, but remember not to lose touch with reality. Online dating should be another way for you to meet real people, and look for true love and friendship. Don’t fall into the trap of using it as a crutch, or a way to hide from the world. The Negative Calorie Diet - Can This Be Real

Saturday, February 16th, 2008

By Jill Miller You have probably heard of the Negative Calorie Diet, sometimes referred to as the Catabolic Diet. On the surface, it sounds like a dieters dream. The more you eat, the more weight you lose. Can this be real? Of course, there is no such thing as a food that contains negative calories. Every food contains calories. The idea behind the Negative Calorie diet is to eat catabolic foods, or negative calorie foods that burn more calories to digest that what they put back. Surprisingly, strictly based on numbers, this is entirely possible, but it should be noted that there is no scientific evidence to verify it. For example, if you eat an orange that hypothetically contains 80 calories, you gain 80 calories. But if that same orange uses 110 calories to digest, you lose 30 calories. Since your body needs 110 calories to digest the orange and the orange only provides 80, where does it get the other 30 calories? It would come from the stored fat in your body. Now all you need to do is eat a crate of oranges every day and you will be thin in no time. OK, that is not very practical. But there are many other catabolic foods to choose from, but as you might expect, they all belong to the fruit and vegetable families. You can chew that cheeseburger until your gums bleed, but you will still consume more calories that you burn. The biggest drawback to the Negative Calorie diet is that fruits and vegetables lack some important nutrients found in meat, dairy, and grain foods. Can we be healthy eating only fruits and vegetables? Of course. Vegetarians do it all the time. Fruits and vegetables are a very important part of a healthy diet. But they are not the only part. The bigger question would be if you are willing to. If you are used to eating meats, dairy, and grains, would you be able to switch to an all vegetarian diet? The better solution would be to incorporate fruits and vegetables into your regular diet. They not only help you burn more calories, but they also provide vital nutrients. They also help fill you up, so you eat less of the other foods. The foods you eat play the most important role in your health and fitness. Like the saying goes, “You are what you eat”.
